Good Ol' Big East

Say what you want about the ACC, but you don't find winners like this in Tallahassee or Greenville (College Park, maybe):

Ahhh, I miss the Big East.

Wait, no. No, I don't.

BU Week

Once again it's one of the most exciting times of the BC hockey season, the week leading up to the annual weekend series with BU. As exciting is it is anytime the Eagles and Terriers meet, and despite the fact that only regular season points are the only tangible thing on the line here, there's a lot to be said for these two great rivals meeting each other on consecutive nights in the teams' home arenas (as opposed to the often overly sterile environment of the FleetCenter/TD Banknorth Garden/whatever the fuck they're calling it this week). I had hoped to make it up to Boston for this one, and although I won't be able to I will be postponing my weekend drinking to listen to the Friday game on internet radio (or ideally finding a bar in Philly to watch it on CSTV) and watching the Saturday game on CN8. I'll type up a full preview later in the week but just wanted to say for now that this is one of my favorite weeks of the BC sports calendar. A good showing (3+ points) by the Eagles this weekend would go a long way towards helping us forget not only about the hockey team's woes, but also the Meltdown in Miami and the basketball team's slow start.

All-ACC Selections

From the ACC site, congrats to BC's All-ACC players:

First team - Matt Ryan, Josh Beekman
Second Team - James Marten, B.J. Raji, DeJuan Tribble (CB)

No clue how JoLonn Dunbar got screwed. Johnny Ayers should've made it as at least the 2nd team punter as well.

------------------------------------------------------------

Interesting article on Brian Boyle from today's Manchester Union-Leader. This kid really has to step it up in order to get the hockey team (#7 in the new USCHO poll) on track. Huge home-and-home with BU this weekend will help set the tone for the rest of the season; I'll be happy with 3 points, and we absolutely need at least 2.

Amato out at NC State

With the announcement today that Amato is done in Raleigh, The Chest becomes the second coach (along with Miami's Larry Coker) to defeat TOB this season and then be fired at the end of the year. He becomes the FOURTH coach in the last three years to share in this "honor" (Syracuse's Paul Pasqualoni and Pitt's Walt Harris were both fired after the 2004 season). And that doesn't include UNC's John Bunting, who survived only one season after the one in which he defeated TOB.

For those who think TOB is a good coach, is there a SINGLE other coach in the country who has lost to 4 coaches in 3 years who would go on to be fired at the end of that season?? I don't know, but my bet is that if there is one, his school's fans are calling for his head.

It's tough going at BC though, what with our small school size, small fan base, and stringent academic requirements. Because everyone knows that only major football factories, schools of 25,000 whose players are paid by boosters and hire stand-ins to take their Underwater Basket Weaving exams, scandal-ridden institutions like Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, have the capability to win the ACC Championship.

Some positives

1. If we end up in Nashville, the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg is only a 90 minute drive away

2. If we end up in San Francisco, the assrapings won't hurt as much seeing as how we're all used to it from watching TOB football

I feel like one of these battered women whose boyfriends get smashed and beat them up but they're too obsessed and pathetic to ever leave them even though they know in the back of their mind it'd be for the best. No matter how often BC football puts me in the hospital I'll be coming right back for more time and time again. I'm pretty sure that TOB will be appearing on next week's episode of Cops in a wife beater drunk off moonshine after the neighbors in the next trailer over called the 5-0 because I was screaming so loud after my latest nightly beating.

Fire TOB Petition

Big ups to Weaton for setting up a Fire TOB petition

There's also a new "Fire TOB" Facebook group, this one is global meaning that you can join even if you are not on the BC network

Quote of the night:

Erin Andrews: "So Coach O'Brien, what adjustments are you going to make for the second half??"
TOBlunders: "Well we're up, aren't we??"

Headin' Out to San Francisco....

For the Christmas Day weekend bowl game
I got my "Fire TOB" shirt on
I guess I never was meant for elite BC football

And honey I shoulda known
That to the Orange Bowl he'll never go

But come next year
It'll be the same
Come next year
Another shitty bowl game

I've spent 5 so-so years
Living TOB's fears
And I just want Jim Grobe by my side..........

Talking Junk in the OB

The English word "thug" comes from the ancient thugee cult in India, a feared group who specialized in murder and robbery of passers-by.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

BC heads down to the OB tonight to take on the modern incarnation of thugs, the University of Miami Hurricanes. While the 'Canes have mostly been a horror show for BC over the years, with our last win coming 22 years ago, this year is shaping up to be different. While Miami still has talent, they are demoralized and, by many accounts, just want to get the year over with. Although this bodes well for BC, the Eagles can't expect to simply show up and take the win. Miami is still a tough team and BC must be careful to avoid a Syracuse showing.

That said, I'm gonna go against my better judgement and say the Eagles take this one. I know I'm just fooling myself, but I really think this team might have finally turned the corner under Matt Ryan. Who the hell knows. But I'm calling an Eagles victory on this one, with Matt Ryan and the defense once again leading the way.

Prediction: BC 27, Miami 17

Happy Thanksgiving to alland GO EAGLES!!

Great Weekend, Bad Night

Sorry about the lack of updates this week (and the short length of this one), been busy/depressed about the Philadelphia Eagles ever since I got back from Boston on Sunday.

AWESOME game on Saturday as the Eagles absolutely demolished Maryland on Senior Day. It's great to see a win like that and it's even better when it keeps our ACC title hopes alive. The good luck continued Saturday night as Virginia Tech took down Wake Forest (which BC should have done).

THUMBS UP
-JoLonn Dunbar
'Nuff said. 2 defensive TDs in a row--simply incredible.

-Matt Ryan
BC didn't need Matty Ice to win the game single-handedly this time, but he certainly gave the impression that he could have if he needed to. Nice job.

-Secondary
Great hit by Anam, great interception and runback by Tribble, nice play overall by Silva, Glasper, and the rest of the guys.

-Spaz
The players won this one, but Spaz put together his best gameplan of the year--keeping the defense on full throttle the entire time and taking the game to the Terps. If only we had done this in Raleigh.

-Ryan Glasper
I know I recognized the secondary earlier, but I also wanted to give special recognition to Glasper, this year's McGillis Award winner, who chose to continue the tradition started by Jazzmen Williams last year of the Award winner wearing McGillis' #31 on Senior Day.

-The Fans who were there
Those of us who were there were loud; despite the noon kickoff, this was one of the loudest BC crowds in recent memory. Think how loud it could've been if everyone had shown up on time and stayed until the end.

THUMBS DOWN
-Officiating
Eagle in Atlanta points out that BC's opponents have not been called for a single holding penalty since Virginia Tech. Simply incredible. While I didn't notice anything in the Maryland game as utterly blatant as the hold that allowed Wake Forest's second touchdown against BC, the officiating was very questionable nonetheless. While some have brought up the possibility of a regional bias against BC, I don't think this was as much of an issue on Saturday given that Maryland was our opponent (now, in the Wake game, you may be talking); I think it was simply shitty refereeing. Not Hockey East bad, maybe, but bad nonetheless.

-False Start penalties
Are we EVER going to get this corrected??

-Fans
Senior Day, one of the biggest games of the year, BC rout over a budding rival, nice weather (a bit chilly maybe, but nothing too bad), and several thousand people show up late and leave early?? Simply inexcusable.

-Maryland
I can't believe we have to cheer for these jokers on Saturday. I noticed the drunks sitting a few rows behind me shouting "BC sucks" every 3 seconds were gone by the end of the 3rd quarter, though. Then they retreat to their message board and bitch and moan about the fact that BOSTON College's PA announcer has a BOSTON accent.

All that summed up, another great game. I'll put up a Miami preview tomorrow.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight was not as good for Eagle Nation as the hockey team fell 6-3 to UNH at home (after a fairly impressive performance in a tough 3-3 draw at Northeastern on Friday night followed by a great 4-3 OT win at Maine on Sunday) and the basketball team fell to a disappointing 1-2 with a 73-64 loss at Providence. I didn't see or hear either game so I won't comment other than to say that it is an absolute outrage that Hockey East forced BC to play UNH tonight. HUGE conference games should not be played the night before Thanksgiving, when there will be virtually NO students in attendance (especially at a private school that draws a lot of students from out of the area). If BC has to play at home tonight, then send Merrimack or Providence into town. No excuse for setting this game up on this night.

Weekend Preview

Not much time, so I gotta keep this short.

BC takes on Northeastern tomorrow night at Matthews Arena, my first chance to see the Eagles in action this year. BC is coming off a week's rest following a tough win at Merrimack, and will face a solid Huskies team that always gets fired up to play BC. It'll be a tough game but I see BC coming out on top. Prediction: BC 3, Northeastern 1

----------------------------------------------------------

Saturday's game, I'm not so optimistic about. I don't know what it is, but this game just screams "TOB special" to me. Maryland has the ACC's second-best QB in Sam Hollenbach and a tough defense. They've been winning close games all season, much as BC was doing early on. Although BC should win both of its remaining games, this is the type that always scares me. I predicted a Terps win in the Battle of I-95, and unfortunately I gotta stick with that here. BC beat its northeastern rival in College Park last year, and the Twerps will be looking to return the favor. I hope I'm wrong....but I don't think so. Prediction: Maryland 23, BC 20

----------------------------------------------------------

I don't mean to be a downer here, so I'll leave you all encouraging to pick up one of these great t-shirts in time for next year's visit to College Park:

Seriously, if you're an idiot, shut the hell up

Yes, that was a horrible loss tonight by the basketball team. There's no way a team of our caliber should ever be losing to Vermont at home by double digits.

That said, one of the worst parts of any particularly bad BC hockey or basketball loss is the inevitable chorus of synchophantic assholes who manage to remove their head from TOB's ass long enough to sarcastically suggest firing Jerry York or Al Skinner. After all, they claim, we call for TOB's head after a WTF loss, why should York or Skinner be any different??

If there is one group of people I want to collectively throw through a plate glass window in a bar Charles Barkley style it is these morons who support TOB more than they do BC. If I actually have to spell this out for you then you are too stupid to be following sports and should stick to watching dominoes and Scrabble on ESPN2 (seriously, what the fuck is up with that??). Nonetheless, I will do so anyway. First, Skinner and especially York have done little things like SUCCEEDING and WINNING CONFERENCE (and, in York's case, NATIONAL) CHAMPIONSHIPS and WINNING BIG GAMES in the past. Thus, they have built up credibility and have EARNED, through RESULTS, a certain margin of error for games like tonight's loss or like the hockey team's losses so far this year. Second, A WTF LOSS IN EITHER HOCKEY OR BASKETBALL IS NOT EVEN REMOTELY AS DAMAGING TO A TEAM'S CHANCES AS A WTF LOSS IN FOOTBALL IS. Just one WTF loss in football can destroy a team's season; one WTF in basketball or hockey, especially in OOC play, means virtually nothing (even 2-3 in basketball or 3-4 in hockey can damage a team's postseason seeding, but that's about it).

Jerry York and Al Skinner are both excellent coaches who are tremendous credits to BC. York, like Joe Paterno, has earned the right to coach at BC for as long as he wants to; Skinner isn't quite at that level yet but he is doing a superb job nonetheless. TOB, meanwhile, gives us 2-3 WTF losses EVERY SINGLE YEAR. When we are losing 8-10 WTF games in hockey or basketball EVERY SINGLE YEAR then maybe you can compare Jerry or Al to TOB. Until then, SHUT THE HELL UP YOU IDIOT.

Anderson Commits; Sheridan out for Maryland

Rivals is reporting that 2-star Florida TE Lars Anderson gave a verbal commitment yesterday on his official visit to The Heights. BC's interest in Anderson only really picked up a month or so ago, so I don't know a lot about the kid, other than that his other offers were from NC State, Michigan State, Central Florida, and Marshall (he did also attract interest from Florida Miami, and West Virginia). His highlights show him to be a good technical blocker with great hands (some circus catches in there). He's at 6'4/224 so he'll need to fill out some before he'll be able to contribute at TE but with all 3 TEs returning next year plus Jordon McMichael coming off a redshirt depth at that position is not a concern. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see McMichael earn a starting job; and with Mark Palmer and Survival Ross both graduating I wouldn't mind seeing either Trey Koziol (if he can stay healthy) or Ryan Purvis move to sort of an H-back position. He has decent speed (4.79), although he doesn't quite have the field-stretching speed of a McMichael.

Kevin Sheridan has been ruled out for Saturday's game against Maryland (which will be a noon kickoff), Josh Beekman will start at C.

31-1

This is what BC's regular season record over the last 3 seasons (up to this one) should be. Instead we are 24-8 in the regular season over that span. SEVEN utterly inexcusable losses in less than 3 years (I won't begrudge TOB the Thursday night loss in Blacksburg last year; not many teams win that game). Incredible.

If BC doesn't win the ACC, I hope Wake Forest does. Not only because they are an admirable program, a great story, and a fun team to watch; but also because they have more obstacles to success than BC does. The school is half the size of BC, similar academics, less history and tradition than BC does, football is not even the top dog sport at the school, they're in a worse recruiting situation than we are (more talent in North Carolina than New England but we face a lot less competition for keeping our local talent at home, whereas they have most of the ACC and half the SEC right in their backyard), etc. An ACC Championship for Wake would go a long way towards exposing TOB for what he is.

28-7 win tonight over Duke
. Yeah, a win's a win I guess, but it's Duke. Not a lot you can really take there. I had to listen to the game on the radio, so I can't really break down the performance, but it sounded uninspired and according to those who were there or watched on TV that is exactly what it was.

Meanwhile, Wake Forest goes into Tallahassee and absolutely destroys FSU
. Kind of puts our 5-point win into perspective.

Weekend Preview

Two BC teams seek to recover from WTF losses this weekend, as the hockey team travels to Merrimack tonight and the football team hosts Duke tomorrow on ESPNU.

This is a huge game for the hockey Eagles. Despite a pair of great wins in Madison, the team has been struggling and has already suffered 3 losses to subpar opposition (although it should be noted that with the wins over the Badgers as well as the season-opening W over what is looking to be a pretty solid Northeastern team, we are 3-0 against quality opponents so far). Tonight's trip to Hockey East's answer for Storrs provides another opportunity for BC to play down to the level of its opposition. That said, I think the team will come out fired up and take this one home. With a brutal stretch coming up consisting of games at Northeastern, home against Maine, at UNH, and a home-and-home with Eurabia Tech-Kenmore, it is absolutely vital that BC take both points tonight. Unlike many BC fans I'm not pressing the panic button just yet, but a loss or even a tie tonight could cause that to happen. Prediction: BC 3, Merrimack 0

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Football takes on Duke tomorrow.

Dude, it's Duke. They suck.

Prediction: BC 38, Duke 3

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Basketball also takes the court tonight for the season opener against UNH. BC should take this one, with or without Sean Williams and Akida McLain. This game will begin to show us whether or not Sean Marshall can help out on outside shooting, or whether it'll be all up to Tyrese Rice once again. If both Seans as well as Rice have big years, there is no reason BC can't make a push for the Final Four.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

YouTube brings us visual representation of the life of a BC sports fan. I'm pretty sure it's actually about the Philadelphia Eagles (who I'm also a diehard fan of, lucky me) but it fits nonetheless. Enjoy.

Whooosh....

Watching the Rutgers-Louisville game sickened me. Not just because I bet more on Louisville than I have ever bet on any sporting event before, but also because of the realization that Tom O'Brien, through his incompetence, has allowed Rutgers, perennial doormat, to pass BC.

Rutgers is 9-0. TOB has never won 9 games in a single regular season before. Greg Schiano has accomplished more in just a few years at Rutgers than TOB has in 10 at The Heights.

Let's kick TOB out on his ass. And let's add Schiano to the short list of names (along with Jim Grobe and David Cutcliffe) to replace him. Schiano has balls, he has the true desire to win a national championship, and he has strong recruiting ties in New Jersey and in Florida. Yeah, he'll probably be on the sidelines for Miami next year; but the 'Canes don't take a shot at him, let's bring him to Chestnut Hill. Hell, even if the 'Canes do take a shot at him, let's outbid them. We are BC, our motto is "Ever to Excel", and I'm sick of this 8-win, crappy bowl mediocrity bullshit. Greg Schiano has turned Rutgers from a 1-11 team into a likely 11-1 squad in half the time that TOB has been at BC. BC could do a hell of a lot worse than bringing him in.

Rutgers has traditionally been one of the worst football programs in the COUNTRY. Yet TOB has allowed a normally-horrific program that BC frequently battles in recruiting to pass us. Can we not do any better than this??

View from the Ledge

I tried to do a more extensive recap of Saturday's game, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Each successive attempt got me angrier and angrier, and I'm pretty sure that I was about 5 minutes away from just breaking random things. Eagle in Atlanta does a nice job of recapping that horror show, so I'll just direct you over there.

The silver lining is this: Saturday's loss, more than any other, seems to have finally started to wake the Boston media up to the smoke-and-mirrors show that has TOB's recent tenure on The Heights. Mark Blaudschun, a frequent target of BC fans' ire, does a great job in today's Globe exposing TOB's bowl streak and inability to win the big games for what they are. A similar article from Karen Guregian appeared in yesterday's Herald. With back-to-back wins over Virginia Tech and Florida State, BC fans wondered if, just maybe, we were turning the corner and this would finally be the year that TOB would take care of business and get us to a big-time bowl. Saturday's loss has dealt those hopes a severe, if not crippling, blow. But is it possible that the corner has been turned in another way?? The administrators of FireTOB.com reported to me a huge upswing in traffic over the last few days, and a Facebook group (unfortunately open only to those who have a Facebook account and are connected to the BC network) dedicated to TOB's ouster created by recent alum Joe Igoe has almost tripled in membership since the Wake game. Perhaps more importantly, as the Blaudschun and Guregian articles show, the Boston media is finally starting to wake up and give TOB just a taste of the treatment that a Red Sox manager or Celtics coach who was turning out similar results would be receiving. This is not only good for BC's program if it helps result in O'Brien's firing, but it is also great for Boston as a college sports town. Traveling to southern ACC venues, BC fans have seen that the local papers in places like Tallahassee, Raleigh, and Atlanta are incredibly critical, sometimes viciously so, of the local team's coach. Developing this kind of press in Boston will only help the city's development as a major college football landmark.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Fresh off a 1-0 squeaker over Vermont, the hockey team tonight heads down the 86 line to Harvard. The Crimson always give BC trouble in non-Beanpot matchups, having notched a 5-3 victory in Conte Forum last year and having claimed 2 of the last 3 fall meetings between the schools. This year will be no different, and a point at Bright Hockey Center seems like a reasonable and attainable goal for the Eagles. Prediction: BC 1, Harvard 1

---------------------------------------------------------------

Basketball season is upon us and that of course means more suspensions. Sean Williams and Akida McLain have been suspended for 2 and 9 games, respectively, for unspecified violations of team rules. In happier news, the Eagles demolished St. Francis Xavier 111-65 in their exhibition game Sunday and are ranked 15th in the preseason USA Today poll. The Eagles open up on Friday night at home against UNH; the first real tests will be on Nov. 22 at Providence and Nov. 29 at home against Michigan State (in BC's ACC-Big Ten Challenge debut). Conference play begins on Dec. 10 at home against northeastern rivals Maryland.

Note: I typed up a preview of the BC-Wake and BC-Vermont games on Friday afternoon, but the Blogger server was down and I was unable to post it before gametime. I did save the post on my computer and in the interest of perspective I've decided to post it anyway, after the fact. Obviously reading it will probably make you throw your computer out the window, so I take no responsibility for any damages to self, inantimate objects, or small animals caused as a result of reading this. I highly suggest that you not read this post at all, or at least skip past the first segment. With that said, for those of you who are braver than I, read on...

It's that time of year again...the game that makes every BC fan wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat with visions of Quinton Porter dressed as a sugar plum dancing in their heads. (Yes, that was a "Twas the Night Before Christmas" reference--first ever on a college sports blog??) And this year, it's even bigger than normal. Wake Forest is a team that gives BC fits every year. Tom O'Brien has suffered 3 straight losses to the Deacons, although Matt Ryan salvaged a victory last year for the team as a whole. And those games were against bad Wake Forest teams. This year, Wake is good. So good, I hope, that BC will not overlook them as we generally do.

True, the best team they've beaten is NC State, and beyond that the closest thing they have to a quality victory would be Syracuse or Ole Miss. But 7-1 speaks for itself; 3-1 in the ACC speaks for itself. And, truth be told, this team should be undefeated. It was only a flukish blocked punt by Clemson that changed the momentum of that game in the Tigers' favor and led to the only blemish so far on Wake Forest's schedule.

Further adding to Eagle anxiety is the fact that Wake will be starting WR Kenneth Moore at RB, due to an injury crisis at the position. The next person to make a Diamond Ferri comparison in my presence will be tasting my fist.

Wake Forest is a very good team, and they possess the best coach in the ACC. Despite the fact that his name has not been mentioned for the job, I would not be at all surprised if Jim Grobe heads down I-40 to fill the vacant position in Chapel Hill next year. I am just putting this out there right now--if I get more than about 2 hours of sleep tonight, I'll consider it a success.

That said, I am cautiously optimistic, and the reason for this is Matt Ryan. He is not going to let this team lose. Grobe's team will keep the score close, but Matt Ryan is not going to be denied in this game. He knows what is on the line--this is BC's biggest game since his first start, against Syracuse in 2004. That did not turn out well, but this will. Life is a lot better when you have one of the top 5 QBs in the country. Ryan will spread the ball around and the defense will hold fast enough to secure the victory for the Eagles. Prediction: BC 20, Wake Forest 13

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hockey also takes the ice tomorrow night, also at 7 pm in front of an expected crowd of 31 against a Vermont team that is difficult to figure out. Despite coming into the season expected to challenge for home ice in the first round of the Hockey East Tournament, the team has yet to live up to expectations. After opening the season with a pair of impressive wins over Colgate and at Miami-Ohio, the Catamounts slipped and come into Conte having lost 3 straight against less than formidable opposition--twice at home against Michigan Tech, followed by another setback Sunday night at Dartmouth. The Elephant Walkers will have something to prove; but so will the Eagles, who followed a pair of point-proving wins in Madison with a sloppy 5-3 loss at Providence.

The big story tomorrow night at Conte will be the empty arena, with most BC fans expected to stay at home and watch the Wake game on TV. While I'm a huge hockey fan and while I'm normally a huge "live event over TV event" guy, I can't disagree with them. You're talking an early November hockey game or one of the biggest football games in years here. The real blame here falls on the athletic department, which should have switched the faceoff time to 2 PM in order to ensure a large, supportive crowd and pushed the women's hockey game against Eurabia Tech, which will be played at 2, back to 7 (or the following day). Again, it would be nice to have an athletic director who was aware of the existence of the school's most successful athletic program (especially since it's a revenue team and arguably has more fan interest than basketball).

Despite a temporary return to the days of the Conte Morgue, the Eagles will take it down. Prediction: BC 5, Vermont 1

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other tidbits for the weekend:

-4-star Pennsylvania DE Derrick Morgan, fresh off his official visit to BC for the Buffalo game, committed to Georgia Tech. Although Morgan would've been a great get, we were always going to be at a disadvantage with him coming to the worst-attended BC football game in years.

-The Herald rumored that Ryan Glasper took limited reps in practice yesterday with an undisclosed injury; he is expected to play tomorrow.

-Hockey East blog is reporting BC has added D Timmy Cross from Winchester Prep and the USHL's Lincoln Stars to the class of 2008. Cross, at 6'3, will provide much-needed size to the BC blue line upon his arrival.

-Nice articles in both the Globe and Herald on Mark Herzlich, who happens to hail from my hometown of Wayne, PA.

-It's only a formality, but Matty Ice will not be a gametime decision tomorrow; he has been cleared to play already.

-No BC content, but today's Globe did have a fascinating article on MIT's football program--something to think about next time we complain about academic standards holding us back at the Heights!!

Well that's all I've got. Gameday tomorrow, and it's a big one. GO EAGLES!!

Fuck this

I am too angry to even speak right now. Why do I continue to invest myself emotionally not to mention hundreds upon hundreds of dollars every year into this fucking team. We are going nowhere as long as TOB is the coach. Get this guy on the next plane out of town and get Jim Grobe into the Yawkey Center. Fuck this bullshit.
